nciipc National Critical Information Infrastructure or

A gazette notification established the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) with specific responsibilities for protecting all CII. The notification further directed that the nciipc, through its activities, promote a consistent and coordinated national response to critical information infrastructure-related threats/challenges and act as the nodal agency for effective bilateral cooperation with other countries. The objectives of the NCIIpc are as under:

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) is mandated to safeguard critical information infrastructures in India by working in coordination with all major stakeholders viz.–Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Defence and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The advantages of recognizing CII:

Although India is one of the fastest-growing economies, it still faces many challenges including infrastructure-related issues. The Government has taken several initiatives for the development of information infrastructure and e-governance to play a vital role in development. However, the major factor which pulls India back is its vulnerabilities when it comes to information security.

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) has been established to tackle such vulnerabilities and strengthen critical infrastructure protection (CIP) in India. While developing e-infrastructure there are two major concerns we need to keep in mind: The security of Personal Data and the Safety of Critical Information Infrastructures which includes Defence, Railways, Airports, etc.

Reason to create the nciipc:

The nciipc are created to protect the critical information infrastructures in India. There are many organisations around the globe like the Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) which works to protect the critical infrastructures in their regions.  The ISAC is a group of cyber security experts and industry members who work together to share information, threat intelligence, and best practices pertaining to cyber security technology through the exchange of ideas.

ISAC provides broad coverage across multiple infrastructure sectors including Critical Manufacturing, Energy and Natural Resources, Financial Services, Government Facilities, Health Care Services, Information Technology (IT), Nuclear Threat Mitigation (NTM), Transportation Systems, and Water and Wastewater Systems.

Features and benefits of the nciipc:

The National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) has planned a National Awareness Program on Cyber Security to make all concerned aware of cyber attacks and their consequences. The NDRI has established an advisory committee that includes experts from academia, industry, legal and policy fraternity who will be consulted for their views on the task force. The advisory committee will also enhance inputs for future decisions pertaining to NCIIPC, its functioning, and its functions.

Final Verdict:

In order to make data protection more efficient and effective, it is essential that the “data controllers” should be well aware of the fact that their data is being processed, how it is being used, where it is being used, and who uses it. They must not only be well aware but also take necessary care in handling the data and ensure safety by following best practices and regular monitoring of information systems to detect unauthorized access. The ‘data controller’ must know that they are responsible for any kind of loss or damage to any person.
